Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to questions you may have about our services. If you don’t see an answer to your particular issue then please contact us using the contact form at the foot of the page.

Why use a Drone?

In the modern construction, drones have moved from being a “cool gadget” to an essential tool for three main reasons:

  • 1. Compliance & Safety (The “Height” Factor): Falls from height remain the leading cause of workplace injury in the UK. By using a drone for the initial inspection, you follow the HSE Hierarchy of Control by avoiding the risk entirely. You get the data you need while your team stays safely on the ground.

  • 2. Unrivalled Detail & Accuracy: Even the best ladder or cherry picker has limited angles. A drone can hover inches away from a chimney stack, dormer window, or valley gutter at a 4K resolution. You can zoom in to see hairline cracks in mortar or slipped tiles that are invisible from the ground, ensuring your quotes are accurate and you don’t miss hidden costs.

  • 3. Speed and Cost-Efficiency: Setting up scaffolding or a 10-meter ladder just to “take a look” is time-consuming and expensive. A drone survey is complete in under 30 minutes. This allows you to quote more jobs per day and reduces the lead time for your customers.

  • 4. Professionalism & Trust: Providing a client with a high-definition “aerial evidence pack” builds immediate trust. It proves the work is necessary and demonstrates that your firm uses the latest technology to ensure a high-quality result. It’s the ultimate “before and after” tool for your portfolio.

Do you need special permission to fly over a residential house?

In most cases, no. As a CAA-registered commercial operator, we can fly in residential areas provided we follow the Drone Code. For most roof imaging, we use a drone weighing under 250g (like the DJI Mini series), which allows us to fly near people and properties legally and safely.

What does a drone flight involve?

A standard drone survey is a streamlined, 4-stage process designed to get you high-quality data with zero disruption to your site.

1. Pre-Flight Planning (Off-site) Before arriving, we conduct a digital “desktop survey.” This involves checking CAA airspace restrictions (e.g., proximity to Bournemouth or Southampton Airport), identifying local hazards, and monitoring weather forecasts. we handle all the necessary risk assessments (RAMS) so you don’t have to.

2. On-Site Setup (5–10 Minutes) Upon arrival, we perform a quick physical safety sweep of the area. We wear full PPE (High-vis/Safety boots) and establish a small, designated “Take-off and Landing Zone.” If needed, we will have a quick word with immediate neighbours to ensure privacy concerns are addressed.

3. The Flight (15–30 Minutes) The flight itself is quiet and efficient. We capture:

  • High-Resolution Stills: Systematic shots of the roof, gutters, chimneys, and elevations.

  • Live Preview: You are welcome to look at my screen in real-time to inspect specific areas of concern without leaving the ground.

4. Data Delivery (Within 24 Hours) Once the drone lands, the job is done. We head back to the office to process the imagery, ensuring everything is sharp and professional. You receive a secure download link containing all your organized assets the very next day.

Can anything hinder a drone flight?

Yes. While modern drones are incredibly capable, certain factors can delay or prevent a flight from taking place. We categorize these into four main areas:

1. Weather Conditions (The Most Common Factor)

  • Precipitation: We cannot fly in rain, snow, or thick fog. Moisture can damage the electronics and obscure the camera lens.

  • High Winds: For stability and high-resolution imagery, we typically do not fly if sustained winds or gusts exceed 24mph.

  • Temperature: Extreme cold can reduce battery life significantly, while extreme heat can cause sensors to overheat.

2. Airspace Restrictions

  • Flight Restriction Zones (FRZs): If a site is near an airport (like Bournemouth or Southampton), a hospital heliport, or a sensitive government site, we must obtain prior authorization from Air Traffic Control (ATC).

  • Temporary Restrictions: Occasionally, the CAA issues temporary restrictions for low-flying military exercises or emergency services activity.

3. Physical Obstacles & Environment

  • Overhead Hazards: Heavy tree canopies or low-hanging power lines can limit the angles we can capture.

  • Signal Interference: Large metal structures or high-voltage pylons can occasionally interfere with the drone’s GPS or compass, requiring us to adjust our take-off location.

4. Legal & Safety Constraints

  • Uninvolved Crowds: If a site becomes too crowded with uninvolved members of the public, we may pause the flight to maintain safety distances.

  • Birds: Large birds (like gulls or birds of prey) can be territorial. If they begin circling the aircraft, we land immediately to prevent a collision or harm to wildlife.

If any of these factors prevent a flight on your scheduled day, Aviatography will monitor the situation and reschedule your survey for the next available “clear-sky” window at no additional cost to you.

How much does a drone flight cost?

At Aviatography, we believe in fair, transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Because every site is unique, our pricing is broken down into three main categories:

1. The “First Flight” Introductory Offer (£ P.O.A.) For new commercial clients, we offer a fixed-price trial. This includes a 20-minute flight for standard residential roof imaging or building project, delivering 10–15 high-resolution images.

2. Standard Residential Survey (£P.O.A.) This is our most popular option for builders and roofers. It includes:

  • Pre-flight risk assessment (RAMS) and airspace checks.

  • Full 360-degree high-res imagery of the structure.

  • Close-up “defect” shots of chimneys, valleys, and leadwork.

  • Digital delivery within 24 hours.

Factors that can affect the price:

  • Airspace Complexity: If the site is within the Bournemouth or Southampton Airport restricted zone, there may be a small admin fee for securing Air Traffic Control (ATC) permits.

The Bottom Line: A drone survey is almost always significantly cheaper—and safer—than hiring scaffolding or a cherry picker just to “take a look.”

How long will it take?

On-Site Time: 20–40 Minutes For a standard residential roof or building survey, we are typically on-site for less than 45 minutes.

  • Setup: 5–10 minutes (Safety briefing and site check).

  • Flight Time: 15–20 minutes (Capturing all angles, chimneys, and gutters).

  • Pack-down: 5 minutes. Because we don’t need scaffolding or ladders, there is zero disruption to your team or the homeowner.

Data Delivery: Within 24 Hours I understand that in construction, speed wins contracts. You will receive a secure download link containing all your high-resolution images via email by the next working day (often the same evening).

Are your drone flights legal?

Yes, absolutely. Every flight conducted by Aviatography is fully legal and compliant with UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations.

We operate under a strict legal framework to ensure safety and privacy:

  • CAA Registration: We hold both a Flyer ID (proving competency in flight safety) and a registered Operator ID, which is clearly displayed on the aircraft as required by law.

  • Commercial Insurance: Unlike hobbyists, we carry specialist commercial drone insurance that is fully compliant with EC 785/2004. This includes £5 million in Public Liability cover.

  • Certified Competency: We are trained in the A2 Category of Open Operations, allowing us to fly high-specification drones in residential and “built-up” areas legally and safely.

  • Airspace Coordination: Before every flight, we conduct a digital airspace check to ensure we aren’t interfering with emergency services, low-flying manned aircraft, or restricted zones (such as those around Bournemouth and Southampton Airport).

  • Privacy Compliance: We operate in accordance with UK GDPR and Data Protection laws. Our cameras are used strictly for the purpose of the flight, and we have protocols in place to ensure the privacy of uninvolved neighbours is respected.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the shoot?

Safety is our priority. We cannot fly in rain or winds exceeding 24mph (Wind Gust Speed). If the forecast looks poor, we will contact you at least 2 hours before the scheduled start to reschedule at no extra cost.

Are you insured if the drone hits something?

Yes. Unlike hobbyists, Aviatography carries specialist EC 785/2004 compliant commercial drone insurance with £5 million in Public Liability. You are fully protected. We will provide full details of our insurance before engaging with any client.

What is the quality of the images?

We provide high-resolution imagery. The detail is sharp enough to see individual cracked tiles, loose lead flashing, or even crumbling mortar joints—details often missed from the ground or a ladder.

How do I get my files?

Within 24 hours of the flight, you will receive a secure link (Google Drive or WeTransfer) to download your images and video. They are yours to keep, use for quotes, or post on your social media.

Do I need to notify the neighbors?

While not always a legal requirement, it is best practice. We provide Privacy Notice cards that you (or we) can pop through the doors of the immediate neighbors to let them know a 15-minute maintenance flight is taking place.

Can you fly in Restricted Airspace (e.g., near an airport)?

Yes, but it requires a bit more planning. If your site is near Bournemouth or Southampton Airport, we will handle the flight authorization (ATC clearance) on your behalf. This usually requires 48–72 hours’ notice.
